German islands
The island Ruegen is with its 926 sq.km the largest German island. The biggest part of this beautiful german island are taking the very long fine sandy beaches and the white shining chalk cliffs. The most imposing nature experience is the northern point of the island, the Cap Arkona with its three gorgeous lighthouses. Really lovely to see are the seaside resorts Binz, Sellin, Baabe and Göhren, with its white guesthouses, built in typical Spa style and their beautiful seabridges. Furthermore there are a lot of cycle - and footpaths all over Ruegen. The boattrips to Usedom, Hiddensee or Denmark are also very popular, especially at the main port Sassnitz. Ruegen offers many nice and interesting activities, like a journey with the narrow - gauge railway, called "Rasender Roland" or a trip to the city of Bergen, the capital of Ruegen. Whatever you will see at this wonderful island, you will love it and never forget it.
Usedom is the second largest island. Its situated at the coast of the Baltic Sea. The island has the exeption to the city of Swinoujscie, which belongs to Poland. The area of Poland has a size of 445 sq.km. The most beautiful sight worth seeing is the imposing seabridge in Ahlbeck.
The island Fehmarn belongs to the Baltic Sea and has an area of 185 sq.km. Fehmarn is connected to the German mainland by the Fehmarn Sound Bridge, which is nearly 964 m long and 69 m high. This island is in use for the resting of the birds and therewith a nice place for ornithologists.
Sylt is an island, which is situated in the north of germany and at the North Sea. The hole area amounts to 99 sq.km. The island has a population of about 2500 people. Sylt has a connection to the German mainland, which is called the Hindenburgdamm.
Föhr is embossed of the tideland. The island is suitable for large walkingtours, especially for tours through the sea bottom. Lovely to see are also the five mills, but there are also a lot more destinations for a day trip. One of the eleven villages should be pleased for you.
The island Nordstrand is the green heart of the tideland and is connected with the German mainland. Nordstrand has an area of 50sq.km and nearly 2.300 inhabitants.The fresh sea breeze and the beautiful environment are beneficial for mind and soul.
The beautiful island Poel makes itself conspicous, caused by the low quantity of traffic. Poel is very calm and one of the best places to relax. It has an area of 36 sq.km and is connected with the German mainland.
Borkum is the largest island in Eastern Friesland, with an area of nearly 37 sp.km. It is situated at the German North Sea. The island is perfect for making a day trip to one of the four guarded beaches, Borkum has to offer.
Pellworm is a spa, which is situated at the North Sea. The island is nearly 38 sq.km large and belongs to North Friesland. Pellworm has no real beach, but it has some other facillities to go swimming.
The length of Norderney amounts to 14 sq.km. Nowadays the island has 6200 inhabitants. This island offers a 14 km long fine sandy beach. Norderney is suitable for Windsurfing and the German Windsurfcup takes place here every year.
